Now I suppose it should be mentioned that this version of Chrome is “unstable” and maybe full of bugs, but I personally didn’t notice any problems so I’m continuing to use it.

This is a demonstration on how in 5 minutes (or less) you can turn the default Firefox layout into a space-saving one, perfect for netbooks, small screens or heck any Firefox layout!

The Original

The Result

How?

Simple. First download the Tiny Menu plugin from the Firefox addons site. This addon compacts file, edit, view, history etc. into one small and simple menu in the top left corner.

Next, remove the bookmark toolbar which hardly anyone actually uses and remover the status bar. To do this go to Menu > View > Toolbars and untick bookmarks toolbar then in Menu > View also untick Status Bar.

To make the navigation buttons (back, forward, refresh, stop and home) smaller right click in a black space on the menu bar then click customise. From here there’s a little tick box at the bottom saying Use Small Icons, tick it.

All that’s left is to shuffle things around, move all your navigation buttons, the address bar and the search bar up next to the tiny menu then hide the navigation toolbar.

And ta da! There we have it. Easy.

Ubuntu’s File Manager, Nautilus, has the option of using custom made scripts to carry out specific functions. Examples of what you can so with these custom made scripts are functions like making an image your desktop background, or setting a file to read-only. Today we’ll be looking at how to mount and unmount an iso image in gnome.

You’ll need to download two files, mount.sh and unmount.sh

They’ll need the apply the correct permissions to them:

sudo chmod +x /home/yourusername/mount.sh

sudo chmod +x /home/yourusername/unmount.sh

Move them both to the Nautilus scripts folder

sudo mv /home/yourusername/mount.sh ~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts/

sudo mv /home/yourusername/unmount.sh ~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts/

And you’re ready to go. To mount an iso image right click on it and under the scripts menu there should be mount.sh and unmount.sh, click on mount.sh.

NOTE: I’ve just found that this only works with ISO images in your home folder

NOTE: This tip was found on Ubuntu Forums

Personally I find this new look, planned to be released in 2010, an amazing new look. It’s only a mock up, a brainstorm of sorts, but this look could bring Firefox up to scratch with other browsers in the user interface category. My only worry is that they will lose some customizability with this change, will you still be able to move buttons and toolbars around to where you wish?

Here is another mockup for Firefox 4.0 with the tabs on top, found at https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/4.0_Windows_Theme_Mockups

There is also a scheduled change to the Firefox UI in the 3.7 release and more images and information can be found at: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/3.7_Windows_Theme_Mockups

Google have announced their new operating system, named Chrome OS. It has been said to include a range of features and due for release mid way through 2010.

Unlike most OSs, Chrome OS like most Google products is very much web-based using online apps like GMail etc.

“Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.” Officical Google Blog

Google are going to be facing tough competition with Windows XP holding the majority of netbook OSs and Intel developing their own lightweight OS. I know I am looking forward to seeing what Google can make of it, tell me what you think with a comment below.
